Welcome to Appleby Street Farm. Come and see us at the Enfield Steam and Country Fair at Colesdale Farm, Northaw on 30/31st August. See the events page for more information. On Sunday June 8th 2008, to celebrate three hundred years of farming on the site, we held an open day, showing off some of the things that go in to running a working farm. Taken over in 2004, this 300 year old, 100 acre dairy farm was changed to livestock, with the aim of providing locally produced meat for the community, and maintaining the rural environment. The old milking parlour was converted into a shop and butcher's shop, and the product range has slowly increased to include fruit and vegetables, honey, jams, and home made pies etc. We run a mix of cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens, with the addition of the odd duck and goat. Breeds vary, but we tend more to the old varieties, taking longer to produce the required size. The flavour of these slower-growing animals is better, and they are usually more hardy. We also have a number of Shire horses as part of a breeding programme, which will work some of our fields in the traditional way, ploughing and harvesting crops. |
